Definition

Pseudopolyps are islands of normal tissue among an areas of extensive ulcearation.  The normal tissu appears raised above the surface masquerading as polyps, yet it is merely the remaining normal tissue.  The cause odf the ulceration is usually Crohn’s disease.

The BE is from a patient with active Crohn’s disease.  The shape of the edematous and near normal mucosa is more tubular in shape suggesting the presence of pseudopolyps – areas of hyperplastic and elongated remaining mucosa. 00918b Courtesy Ashley Davidoff MD
